How to Manage Your Diabetes Blood Sugar Level
![]() |
Diabetes is a medical disease in which the body either doesn't produce insulin properly or cannot use it. Insulin is necessary for the metabolism of glucose. Untreated diabetes can cause serious complications like organ failure, nerve damage, blindness, coma and even death. Fortunately, diabetes can usually be effectively managed before these complications occur. Your doctor can diagnose diabetes and teach you how to manage it. The three types of diabetes are Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes. Regardless of which type you have, you will need to manage your diabetes blood sugar level on a daily basis.
Regular testing is of utmost importance. Testing is easy and fast thanks to the various kits available. You will need a glucose testing meter, preferably a digital one to make reading your results foolproof. Some testing meters even speak the results. A lancet is used to extract a single drop of blood, which is placed on a test strip and inserted into the meter. Testing takes only a few seconds once the strip is properly inserted.
Understanding your results and how to proceed is crucial for proper diabetes management. What is normal blood sugar will depend on when the test is being taken. For example, what is normal for fasting blood sugar is different from what is normal after eating. Your doctor will give you target levels to aim for and let you know when you should be checking your blood sugar. Some diabetics need only to check once a day, others will need to test multiple times. If your blood sugar is too low or high, your doctor will tell you how to deal with the problem. High sugar levels are often managed with diet and exercise, while low blood sugar can be remedied by eating or taking glucose.
Part of managing your diabetes blood sugar level may include insulin therapy, especially if you have Type 1 diabetes. Insulin is commonly administered via injection and comes in different varieties. It is extremely important to work closely with your doctor if you require daily insulin. Urine testing kits are often used by Type 1 diabetics because it's important for them to monitor the level of ketones in the urine. Other management supplies for all types of diabetes may include glucose tablets or certain food items for raising low blood sugar. If you have questions about how to manage your blood sugar, speak to your doctor.
