Creating a Diabetes Supply Kit
![]() |
Every diabetic should have a diabetes supply kit with them at all times. If you've been recently diagnosed with Type 1, Type 2 or gestational diabetes, you probably have a lot of questions. Your doctor can answer those questions and guide you in putting together a kit for diabetes management. The basic diabetes kit will contain several common items that you will be using on a regular basis and other items that may be used as needed.
A glucose test meter is an important piece of equipment for every diabetic. Accu-Chek, One Touch and Ascencia are all examples of name brand test meters. The majority of test meters used today are digital, and some even talk. This means you get clear results with no guessing involved. Results are lightning fast, too. Modern test meters can provide you with results in a matter of seconds. You will also need test strips to insert into the meter. Some meters come in kit form complete with test strips. When you run out of test strips, they can be purchased separately. The final aspect of your testing kit is your lancing device. Lancing is quick, easy and practically painless with today's advanced supplies.
If you require insulin, you will not only need insulin but a way to inject it. Insulin supplies can be purchased at any diabetes supply store. There are syringes and pens in various designs to make it as easy and comfortable as possible to inject insulin. For individuals with Type 1 diabetes, urine testing kits may also be necessary to monitor the ketone levels in the urine. Diabetics at risk for hypoglycemia or low blood sugar should also carry glucose tablets or candy with them to raise sugar levels quickly if necessary.
Now that you know the components of a diabetes supply kit, you will want to create several. You should have one for the home, one for work or school and one for traveling. Your family and friends should be made aware of where your kit is kept and how it is used in case you ever require emergency assistance. Well-stocked diabetic supplies are a vital part of proper diabetes management. Supplies can be purchased at your local pharmacy, medical supply store or even online. If you have questions about purchasing or using your supplies, consult with your physician.
