It is especially true that in most nations living the “Western Lifestyle” that diabetes is almost at epidemic levels. Certainly, this is true in the United State.

Much continues to be written about this scourge and what it does to the human body. And, in the popular press, there constantly are plenty of ideas about what can and should be done to control it

The diagnosis, testing of and supplying various medicines to deal with diabetes has created a huge business.

So, is it possible that there is another treatment for diabetes? A plant, perhaps? If so, we would not expect that the medical/pharmaceutical industry would be discussing it at any length.

Maybe, it is time to look at the herb Banaba and what it might do. Banaba is a popular medicinal plant used for the treatment of diabetes mellitus (ordinary diabetes) in the Philippines. Because of this, there has been some research done on Banaba leaves and their ability to reduce blood sugar, and its “insulin-like principle.”,

Banaba contains a natural plant insulin which may be taken orally, and according to Japanese research, Banaba has no side effects.

Banaba Leaf has been studied extensively in Japan. In one study, chicken feed was mixed with dried Banaba Leaf and fed to chickens. The yolks of eggs from these chickens was then analyzed.

When the egg yolks were analysed, it was discovered that Banaba was present. When these enriched egg yolks were fed to diabetic mice, their blood sugar was normalized.

In a different, and unusual study, Banaba an alcohol leaf extract of Banaba leaf was sprayed into the air in a bedroom where a patient with diabetes was sleeping. The result was that as the person slept, trace amounts of corosolic acid were deposited in the lungs. Corosolic acid is said to regulate the levels of blood sugar.

This test proved that night-time spraying could reduce the blood sugar of the subject. This showed that corosolic acid had been absorbed by the lungs. The Banaba Leaf has been found to be high in corosolic acid.

Following the studies done by the Japanese which isolated corosolic acid as the active component in the Banaba plant, other studies took place. A 1999 study in Florida found that corosolic acid lowered blood sugar levels of all patients. The higher the dosage of corosolic acid, the lower blood sugar levels dropped.

In addition, more recent studies have shown that the entire herb is said to be useful in lowering blood sugar, One study showed that the whole Banaba herb (leaves, roots, etc) had a glucose lowering effect and could be used to fight diabetes.

The Leaf of the Banaba plant was found to have a beneficial effect in an entirely different area from diabetes. It could help with obesity because it caused weight loss in patients. This may be true because of the way Banaba Leaf helps bodily function.

Supplementwatch.com says: “An interesting side-effect of tighter control of blood sugar and insulin levels is a significant tendency of Banaba to promote weight loss (an average of 2-4 lbs. per month) ” without significant dietary alterations. It is likely that modulation of glucose and insulin levels reduces total caloric intake somewhat and encourages moderate weight loss.”

Many weight loss products now use the Banaba plant as a natural and safe component . This is the result of the many studies made of the plant.

The procurement of Banaba is beyond the scope of this report. We can only say that not all suppliers stock this herb. It is not an expensive herb to purchase.
