5 Common Diabetes Myths

Most Common myth number 1:

People who suffer from diabetes to not have to avoid sugar. However they should follow a balanced diet just like anyone else, a diet that is low in sugar, salt and fat. Diabetes sufferers should enjoy a variety of food just like people without diabetes.

Most Common myth number 2: Diabetes sufferers should have special food

A number of special “diabetic” foods have been made available in recent years. These “diabetic” foods are generally high in calories and saturated fat and have a diabetic food label. A few years after their release it was found that they have a direct link with diarrhoea in some diabetic sufferers and still affect blood glucose levels, despite being much more expensive than conventional treats.

Myth number 3: It’s not safe to drive if you have diabetes

People with diabetes who are responsible enough to control their condition are just as safe as any other driver. Research has proven this time and time again however they myth still survives that people with diabetes are less safe. This has even led to diabetes sufferers being disallowed from driving certain vehicles.

Most Common myth number 4:

People with diabetes can enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle through sport. There are a number of famous athletes that suffer from diabetes including our very own Steve Redgrave. Steve Redgrave is an Olympic gold medal winner and he achieved this while suffering from diabetes. But just like any other exercise regime, it is wise to check with a doctor before starting.

Common myth number 5: Diabetes sufferers are prone to colds and illnesses

Diabetes sufferers do not catch colds or other illnesses any more or less frequently than other people. However having flu jabs is recommended for people with diabetes as illness can affect the blood glucose level. It is this reason that diabetes sufferers should take extra care when ill to avoid risking a dramatic change in blood glucose.
