Pick up any magazine or watch any television show and you will see features and advertisements to help people lose weight. It is one of the hottest searches on the search engines and the one thing that everyone seems to want to talk about. However, there is a forgotten group of people in the world, especially in this country, whose most basic needs are not being met. These are the people who need to gain weight, including small children who are still in the most important growth and development cycle of their young lives, people who are recovering from serious illness and those who are trying to build additional muscle mass. Continue reading →

Every few years there are new diets introduced suggesting that if you count calories you will be more conscious of them, and therefore you will eat less and lose weight. But being conscious of calories is not the same as choosing not to eat as many. Simply acknowledging the calories in that bacon triple cheese burger with extra bacon and chocolate milkshake is not going to negate them. It will not block their artery clogging cholesterol, saturated fat and simple carbohydrates that leave you feeling hungry even though you never burned them off. Continue reading →

More than 23 million people in the United States alone have diabetes, a disease that happens when the body is unable to make enough insulin or is not able to properly use insulin. Instead of moving into the cells, sugars build up in the body, which can lead to a number of serious health issues, including kidney disease, and heart disease. After being diagnosed with diabetes, patients may think that life as they know it is over. Actually, diabetics can live long, healthy lives, as long as they take their medications, exercise, eat healthy and keep their weight down. There are two main types of diabetes - juvenile diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. A third type of diabetes is known as gestational diabetes. Continue reading →

Too many people look at the numbers on the scale, get upset and then do something drastic. One of the first things that people tend to do when they need to lose a little weight is to start eating very small meals or, worse, stop eating altogether. While they may lose a little weight initially, the pounds that they drop will be water weight only and will come back quickly. Not only will the weight come back, but you will find that it becomes very difficult to lose any more weight at all. By eating a diet with too few calories, you have turned off your metabolism, the furnace that burns the fat. Even when you are trying to lose weight, you need to have the right amount of calories in your daily diet to ensure that you are getting the proper nutrition and that you have enough energy to get through the entire day. Continue reading →

It is important that we all follow a healthy, well-balanced diet in order to have long, healthy lives. For diabetics, a healthy diet is even more important than it is for others. More than 23 million Americans suffer from diabetes, and millions more may be at risk of developing the disease, or may even have it and not realize it. There are three types of diabetes - Type 1 or juvenile diabetes (about 5-10% of all cases), Type 2 diabetes (which is the most common, and seen in approximately 95% of all cases of diabetes) and gestational diabetes. Continue reading →

In the United States alone, heart disease and strokes are the cause of more than 40% of all adult deaths. In 2006, more than 450,000 coronary bypass surgeries were performed in US hospitals, followed by more than 2,000 heart transplant surgeries in 2007.
Everyone knows that we eat to give our body energy and raw materials to function, heal, and grow. Even the most avid couch potato burns energy sitting on the couch and watching TV. The human body is a machine, which means it needs energy to operate at all times. A sleeping person may not look like he's doing much of anything, but there are still brain impulses racing around, the heart is still beating, the lungs are still inhaling and exhaling. Hair and nails are growing, and skin is regenerating. If there's no energy for the body to operate, none of this will happen. More and more body functions will be cut off in an attempt to conserve power. And as everyone knows, starvation can lead to a great many problems - even before it gets to the point of being life-threatening. Continue reading →

Bariatric surgery has been around since the 1950's, however since that time there have been many improvements to the procedures that are used. One of these changes is the use of smaller incisions or no incisions at all. The less invasive that a surgery, the less time that is needed for recovery and the less chance of infections and complications that can endanger a patient's life. The most common type of surgery is the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, which makes a small pouch from a portion of the stomach and then bypasses part of the small intestine. This is only one of many types of weight loss surgery that can be considered. Continue reading →
